Cardano Foundation ships x402 SDK for ADA agent API payments

The Cardano Foundation put Cardano into the official x402 SDK on September 21, 2026, shipping @x402/cardano on npm so apps and AI agents can pay for HTTP API calls in ADA or Cardano native tokens without accounts, API keys, or checkout pages. The Foundation said Cardano’s x402 specification was merged in June, then engineers built client, server, and facilitator components—with Masumi Network adding an escrow transfer method after a three-month review.
x402, governed under the Linux Foundation’s x402 Foundation, repurposes HTTP status 402 Payment Required so a resource server can quote a price, a client can settle on-chain, and the server can release the payload once payment clears. On Cardano, the wallet signs the full transaction; the facilitator verifies and relays but holds no keys and cannot move funds on its own. Developers install with npm install @x402/cardano; TypeScript is first, with Python planned next.
Cardano’s scheme defines three transfer methods: address-to-address payments, Masumi escrow against signed job terms, and arbitrary Plutus smart-contract locks declared by the seller. Facilitator endpoints documented in coverage include POST /verify, POST /settle, GET /supported, and GET /health. That stack is meant for agentic commerce—agents discovering services and paying per request—rather than for another consumer checkout widget.
Honesty check for protocol desks: a working Java x402 v2 facilitator repo reports 166 passing unit tests and one end-to-end on-chain proof on Cardano preprod, walking mempool acceptance, block inclusion, and confirmation depth up to 20 blocks. Nothing in that repository has been executed against mainnet. Client-side submission is unit-tested but not shown in a live provider setting, and project docs keep end-to-end credentials marked testnet-only. Infrastructure yes; commercial mainnet volume not yet evidenced.
Competitive context arrived the same week. Solana’s official account claimed on September 22 that Solana handled 76% of all x402 transactions—about 23.2 million in four weeks versus 3.39 million for the next-largest network. Cardano currently appears in the TypeScript column of x402’s SDK tracker while Solana and EVM stacks span more languages. Joining the table is not the same as processing production agent volume.
Price backdrop is secondary but real: ADA reclaimed roughly $0.25 with about a 26% weekly gain as Bitcoin sat near the mid-$80,000s, coinciding with Cardano’s ninth anniversary window since the September 23, 2017 genesis block. That market tape does not prove x402 adoption; it only explains why the SDK news is landing in a louder ADA cycle.
For Dev & Protocol Pulse, the usable facts are npm availability of @x402/cardano, three transfer methods including Masumi escrow, a keyless facilitator design, preprod proof with 166 tests, and no published mainnet settlement volume yet. Node Zero will watch for a hosted facilitator URL on the Cardano developer portal, a first mainnet settlement print, and whether Python clients ship as promised—not for marketing claims that the agent economy already runs on ADA rails.
Builders should also separate the Foundation’s SDK announcement from third-party facilitator forks that advertise mainnet config flags. Hot-wallet signer designs and allowlist env vars in community repos are operational risk notes, not Foundation product claims. Stick to what Cardano published: official SDK membership, npm package, Express/Next templates on the developer portal, and a hosted facilitator URL still marked as forthcoming.
That forthcoming hosted endpoint is the next concrete milestone. Until it appears—and until someone publishes a mainnet settlement count—treat x402-on-Cardano as a developer on-ramp into an agent-payment standard already dominated, by Solana’s own numbers, elsewhere. The protocol story is real; the volume story is not yet written on Cardano mainnet.
8bitcrypto’s Node Zero desk will log the first verified mainnet settle as a follow-up LN rather than inflate today’s preprod proof into production readiness. For Sep 23’s open, the desk lead is clear: Cardano joined the official x402 SDK, agents can theoretically pay in ADA over HTTP, and the burden of proof shifts from code merge to on-chain usage.
Bottom line: Cardano is now an official x402 SDK rail for ADA/CNT HTTP micropayments; plumbing is open-source and preprod-proven; mainnet commercial traction remains unproven; Solana still claims the bulk of current x402 transaction share.
