CZ Calls for Crypto Security Alliance and AI Defenses After Binance Hack

Changpeng “CZ” Zhao used his first public interview since the Oct. 29, 2026 Binance security incident to push an industry-wide answer that is not another withdrawal checklist: a crypto security alliance that shares lessons, runs cross-audits, and helps freeze stolen funds faster, paired with heavier investment in AI-based defenses. The comments landed on the Talking Tokens podcast and were carried by desks including The Block and CoinDesk as Binance’s own Initial Findings path already sits on this site’s Rug Room tape (15841). This Plain English Policy chapter is the alliance and standards beat — not a reprint of the Homebrew-to-EIP-7702 forensic ladder.

Zhao framed the speed problem in one line that The Block quoted: hacking will pick up because AI capabilities are so strong now, so the industry has to use more AI to defend — “the only way to fight a monster is to kind of become that monster.” CoinDesk’s exclusive cut of the same warning put it more bluntly for exchanges and banks: “The industry needs to use AI to prevent AI hacks,” with Zhao arguing attackers only need one crack while defenders must find and fix all of them. He urged companies to spend on AI defenses, security personnel, and partnerships with AI security providers rather than treating security as a one-time milestone before adoption.

The alliance ask is concrete even while membership stays unnamed. Zhao said he encourages forming an industry alliance on security so firms can learn from each other’s mistakes, share best practices, run cross-audits, and help each other freeze funds quickly. TokenPost’s wrap of the same thread says crypto firms are discussing that structure and that Gate founder Dr. Han previously floated a shared security alliance after a Binance security incident — still discussion, not a launched roster. Zhao also said he had not spoken with President Donald Trump or other U.S. officials about the incident, while welcoming government help; Trump has said the U.S. was “looking into it.”

Zhao’s national-security framing is the policy hinge. He said what is bad for crypto at this scale has real economic impact elsewhere because stablecoins, tokenized stocks, real-world assets, and traditional finance are interconnected — so the hit is not “one specific problem for one specific company,” and given the size of impact it is “definitely at the national security level as well.” The Block also notes he learned of the incident around midnight in the UAE and focused on community communication while Binance’s team worked containment; he attributed relatively calm markets and later net inflows to response capacity and user trust, while calling incidents preventable when firms stay diligent instead of complacent.

Keep the AI claim bounded to what desks actually sourced. Zhao did not present evidence that AI agents directed laundering of the stolen Binance funds; CoinDesk separately reported that Elliptic’s Tom Robinson assessed the laundering as automated scripts without signs of an AI agent making decisions. Binance’s own Initial Findings still name the months-long human social-engineering and signing-service path. Separately, The Block situates Zhao’s comments beside other recent security incidents including an AI-assisted breach at analytics firm Chainalysis and the ~$46 million Mercado Bitcoin episode already tracked on this desk’s Mercado chapters — context for why an alliance pitch is landing now, not proof those incidents share one attacker.

For collectors and NFT desks that settle through large CEXs, the practical policy beat is custody and freeze coordination upstream of bids. An industry alliance that actually shortens freeze windows and cross-audits would matter more to vaulted and marketplace rails than another social screenshot of a recovery percentage. Until members, bylaws, or a dated freeze-coordination playbook post, treat Zhao’s interview as a standards ask with primary podcast and desk receipts — not as a live product launch. Prefer The Block / CoinDesk write-ups and the Talking Tokens episode over anonymous alliance rumors.

What changes for bids: Watch for any named founding members, cross-audit charter, or dated freeze-coordination receipt from the alliance talks Zhao and peers describe; keep Binance’s remaining Update #6 rails and broader PoR/zk window on a separate custody calendar; and treat AI-defense spend claims as company statements until a vendor, tool, or audit product is named in a primary source.

Bottom line: CZ’s first post-hack interview asks for a crypto security alliance — shared lessons, cross-audits, faster freezes — and heavier AI defenses as national-security framing lands beside Binance’s still-open recovery calendar, without naming alliance members or launching a product.
