Ethereum’s next latency fight is moving from Magicians threads into institutional lobbying. Secondary coverage dated September 18–19 says nonprofit Ethereum Institutional publicly backed Ethlabs‘ push for EIP-8198—branded Quick Slots—to cut Ethereum’s block-time target from 12 seconds toward an initial 10-second cadence after the Glamsterdam cycle, on the path toward the later Hegotá upgrade window.
CryptoBreaking’s KuCoin-hosted wrap quotes Ethereum Institutional urging the community to “make Ethereum faster” as more institutional activity moves onchain. Ethlabs, in the same reporting chain, cites support from 20 DeFi founders for Quick Slots and says it is merging proposal specifications into the main codebase while hunting downstream dependencies. Those are advocacy and process claims—not a client-team vote that Hegotá is locked.
The draft EIP itself, authored by Carl Beekhuizen and merged into the EIPs repository as a Standards Track core draft, is broader than a one-number speed bump. It proposes making SLOT_DURATION_MS a runtime consensus-layer configuration instead of a compile-time constant, then using that infrastructure to reduce slot duration. The draft table currently shows an illustrative move from 12,000 ms to 8,000 ms as a placeholder, while Ethlabs’ Hegotá advocacy and the September press framing emphasize a conservative first cut around 10 seconds. Why NFT and DeFi desks should care is timing predictability. Swaps, liquidations, mint races, and marketplace settlements all sit on slot cadence.
