OKX Star Xu says Thorchain TSS vaults are intermediaries, not Bitcoin-like

OKX founder Star Xu publicly challenged Thorchain’s claim that it is decentralized like Bitcoin and Ethereum, arguing that its validator-controlled threshold-signature (TSS) vaults still act as an intermediary between users and native chains, TokenPost, Bitpush, Gate News / Odaily, and ChainCatcher reported overnight after Bitget stolen-fund routing renewed the debate. Star’s X reply, carried in those wraps, said dispersing control among multiple signers “does not eliminate the intermediary itself.” Attribute the TSS critique and quote to Star / OKX via those Saturday–Sunday desks—do not invent that Thorchain validators voted on a new blacklist.

Why the custody model sits at the center. TokenPost’s Saturday evening feature says Thorchain validators jointly control assets held in TSS vaults and can move funds once a signing threshold is met—Star’s point is that shared custody is still custody, not base-layer consensus. Gate News / Odaily’s Sunday morning pass repeats that framing: TSS plus validators make Thorchain an intermediary relative to Bitcoin or Ethereum’s underlying consensus, not an equivalent. Treat the architecture description as attributed desk coverage of Star’s argument, not as a new Thorchain whitepaper excerpt.

The pause inconsistency Star and peers keep citing. ChainCatcher’s Sunday wrap says Star argued that when Thorchain’s own treasury was drained in May, node operators paused the network within minutes and it stayed offline about 13 hours—so a chain that can stop for its own funds but refuses to stop for others’ funds, in Star’s words, does not “act like Bitcoin,” because Bitcoin cannot be stopped while Thorchain can choose when to stop. TokenPost’s companion Saturday piece notes community critics pointing to a prior multi-week service suspension after an earlier attack as evidence the protocol has intervened before. Attribute pause lengths to those named wraps; do not invent a single audited downtime clock.

What this post is not. LN 9790 already covered Bitget CEO Gracy Chen’s formal refuse-service ask and Thorchain’s same-day permissionless reply comparing itself to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BNB Chain. LN 9786 and LN 9776 filed Binance ETH refuel and unfreezable XRP moves. LN 9737 covered Circle/Tether’s small stablecoin freezes. Today’s unused angle is Star Xu’s TSS-intermediary rebuttal—plus SlowMist founder Yuxian’s parallel Sunday critique that decentralization should not be a slogan while Thorchain keeps earning fees on large hacker cross-chain swaps (ChainCatcher).

SlowMist color lands beside Star’s thread. ChainCatcher quotes SlowMist’s Yuxian saying the Bitget theft’s scale and suspected North Korea links make industry response a shared problem, that Circle and Tether already helped freeze related stablecoins, and that Thorchain earlier intervened quickly when it was the victim yet answered this industry incident with “decentralization and non-interference” while continuing to take fees. Yuxian also said Thorchain-style platforms should not be casually equated with Bitcoin and Ethereum because decentralization degrees and mechanisms differ. Attribute every SlowMist line to that ChainCatcher pass.

How the Bitget backdrop stays thin here without reprinting prior desks. Bitget still pegs the haul near $387.5 million, runs a 5% freeze/recovery bounty, and stages withdrawals from September 28. MistTrack-linked desks say attacker funds again touched Thorchain rails after Bybit-era routing near $1.2 billion through the same protocol. None of that replaces Star’s unused custody critique: if Thorchain can pause for its own vault event, the “we are like Bitcoin” defense is a governance choice, not a physics constraint.

Rejected near-echos for this tick. Chen’s refuse-service ask plus Thorchain’s permissionless reply is LN 9790. Solana’s first clear print above $120 since January is LN 9796. Fed stablecoin sub-48-hour liquidation clock is LN 9794. Quit reclaim / ERC721C blocks are LN 9788. Phygital desk 59 remains unused—no fresh vaulted-collectible catalyst cleared the last-6-hours bar beyond recycled CryptoSlam Courtyard rankings already adjacent to LN 9769.

Why Rug Room 52 plus Latest News 16 (no Editor’s Pick—Sep 26 OC EP already 5/5). An overnight OKX founder rebuttal that Thorchain’s TSS vaults are intermediaries—and SlowMist’s matching slogan critique—is unused exploit-aftermath governance tape distinct from Chen’s Saturday ask. Author is Crypto Wire for desk 52. Publicize stays off.

What not to invent: that Thorchain validators voted to blacklist Bitget addresses overnight, a precise dollar total of Bitget loot already swapped on Thorchain beyond attributed desks, that Star spoke for OKX corporate policy beyond his X posts, or that SlowMist’s Yuxian comments constitute a formal SlowMist product advisory. Stick to TokenPost / Bitpush / Gate–Odaily / ChainCatcher attributions for Star’s TSS critique, the May pause claim, and Yuxian’s parallel pushback.

Bottom line: OKX founder Star Xu says Thorchain’s TSS vaults are intermediaries that can pause—not Bitcoin-like neutrality—unused Rug Room news for Sep 26 OC.
