Railway Env-Var Breach Tied to About $371K Crypto Drains Across 19 Chains

Cloud deploy platform Railway said on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 that an unauthorized party may have accessed encrypted customer environment variables and, for some of them, obtained the decrypted contents — secrets that can include API keys, database passwords, and private registry credentials. Blockchain investigator Taylor Monahan (@tayvano_) separately tied the window to roughly $371,000 in crypto drains across 19+ EVM-compatible chains, more than 500 transactions, and 200+ addresses, with a first known theft at 19:36 UTC Oct 21 — hours before Railway’s public security post. This is a Rug Room credential-exposure chapter — env-var secrets and wallet sweepers — not a DeFi smart-contract bug and not a marketplace fee change.

Per Railway’s Oct 21 security disclosure (co-founder Jacob Cooper), the company detected anomalous activity on systems that store customer env vars, paused deployments while investigating, and told all users to immediately rotate env vars (including API keys) and private registry credentials and to review service logs. Railway said it believes the incident is part of a recent wave of attacks on platform companies aimed at compromising AI inference providers, and that it notified those upstream providers to revoke keys. Initial analysis suggested impact may be limited to a subset of users; affected accounts would be emailed as confirmed. Follow-ups on status.railway.com described rotating storage-bucket credentials and later invalidating Railway API tokens — Railway has not independently confirmed Monahan’s dollar loss total.

Monahan’s public timeline (via reporting that cites her Oct 22 posts) places builds paused ~07:24 UTC Oct 21, broader API/CLI/dashboard pause ~09:28 UTC, first known crypto theft ~19:36 UTC, and Railway’s disclosure ~21:51 UTC — more than two hours after that first drain. She named suspected attacker address 0xd9773325282874d18cb83f1fe50f14c39750b2ee and described a relatively standard wallet-sweeper script rather than custom malware for this event. The $371k figure remains an external estimate; Railway has not said how many private keys (if any) sat in env vars or whether the identified sweeps are complete.

For NFT and marketplace desks, the useful cut is ops hygiene: if bot wallets, royalty routers, or marketplace indexer keys lived in Railway env vars, treat them as burned until rotated — same class of risk as stale “approved for all” marketplace contracts, but via cloud secret storage rather than on-chain approvals. Do not treat Monahan’s $371k as Railway’s official loss figure, and do not treat “AI inference provider targeting” as a named attribution without Railway naming the actors.

Prior Fearless Wallet extension key-leak LN stays a separate browser-wallet chapter; today’s beat is a PaaS env-var disclosure with an external multi-chain sweeper trail. Slice Protocol / Limit Break archives stay their own exploit files.

What to watch on-chain next: Watch whether more drains hit 0xd977…b2ee or new sweeper clusters, whether Railway emails a confirmed-affected customer count and ties any private-key exposure to the env-var path, and whether status updates restore builds with a clear “rotate then redeploy” order — the desk cares about confirmed key exposure and residual hops, not the outage clock alone.

Bottom line: Railway disclosed a possible env-var secret breach on Oct 21 while pausing deploys; Monahan separately mapped ~$371,000 in multi-chain wallet sweeps starting 19:36 UTC — Railway has not confirmed that loss total.
