UK FCA opens crypto authorisation gateway with February 28 2027 application deadline

The UK Financial Conduct Authority has opened its cryptoasset authorisation gateway. In a September 30 press release, the regulator said crypto firms can now apply for FCA authorisation—or vary existing permissions—ahead of the new regime that takes effect on October 25, 2027, with firms that intend to keep operating in the UK told to apply by February 28, 2027. That is today’s unused Plain English Policy beat: the application window is live, not another perimeter-guidance wrap (8760) and not the ESMA MiCA consultation response (10411). Primary desk read is the FCA press release plus the regulator’s prepare-for-authorisation and gateway-operations pages.

What the gateway actually opens. For the first time under the forthcoming FSMA cryptoasset package, UK crypto businesses can file for full authorisation against standards covering consumer protection, safeguarding of customer assets, market integrity, and financial resilience. Authorisation is not automatic. Dominic Cashman, the FCA’s director of authorisation, said firms can now apply and start preparing for regulation, while the release stresses that firms that cannot meet the standards will not be authorised to operate in the UK market. Existing MLRs registrations do not convert automatically—operators must apply anew or vary permissions, a point the perimeter-guidance desk already flagged on 8760 and that this gateway open makes operational.

Dates collectors and venues should not blur. The application period runs from September 30, 2026 through February 28, 2027. The new cryptoasset regime itself is expected to commence on October 25, 2027. The FCA says it expects to determine applications submitted during that window before commencement. Firms that apply in-period and are still awaiting a decision when the regime starts can continue providing cryptoasset services—including taking on new business—while assessment continues. Apply late or file a poor-quality pack, and the regulator’s own guidance lists rejection, delay, refusal, or an inability to keep offering regulated cryptoasset services after go-live.

Why NFT and marketplace desks still care. UK platforms that list NFTs, custody collectibles, arrange deals, or touch staking and stablecoin rails sit inside the perimeter the FCA has been building since final crypto rules landed in June 2026 and perimeter guidance PS26/18 clarified when activities need authorisation. A live application window means compliance calendars move from “read the perimeter paper” to “file or plan exit.” Pre-application support meetings and on-demand webinars are available; dual-regulated firms are pointed toward the Prudential Regulation Authority as well. Treat those support channels as process aids—not as a guarantee of approval.

How this sits against other policy ticks on the board. 10411 covered ESMA’s MiCA review asks on DeFi gateways and unauthorized stablecoins—an EU consultation response, not UK authorisation. 8760 explained when cryptoasset activities need FCA authorisation under perimeter guidance. Today’s unused fact is the gateway itself opening so firms can submit packs against the February 28, 2027 in-period deadline. Daily Crypto Brief draft 10376 stays untouched. Desk of the Day is already spent for October 1 on Rug Room’s MetaMask fee-diversion LN (10418)—no DotD line here. Do not invent that every UK NFT marketplace is already authorised, that MLRs firms are automatically cleared, or that the October 25, 2027 regime is in force today.

What not to invent from the press release. The FCA did not publish a day-one count of applications received. It did not name which marketplaces, custodians, or staking providers filed first. It did not rewrite MiCA, ESMA’s consultation response, or Brazil’s eFX stablecoin settlement rule. Stick to the published clocks—apply by February 28, 2027 for transitional comfort, regime live October 25, 2027—and to the four assessment pillars Cashman’s office will score against. Anything else is speculation the Plain English desk will not print.

What changes for bids: UK NFT venues, custodians, and stables rails now have a live filing window through February 28, 2027; watch which named platforms announce they have applied, which stay silent into winter, and whether any high-profile operators signal they will not seek authorisation before the October 25, 2027 cutover.

Bottom line: the UK FCA opened its cryptoasset authorisation gateway on September 30, giving firms a live path to apply through February 28, 2027 before the October 25, 2027 regime—authorisation is not automatic, and MLRs registrations do not convert on their own.
