ZachXBT questions zkSNARKs $17M Zcash NFT raise over missing utility

On-chain detective ZachXBT has put the Zcash NFT collection zkSNARKs back on the Rug Room board one day after its blind auction cleared, arguing the project raised roughly $17 million while showing little practical utility or ecosystem build-out. Secondary reports dated September 19 summarize his critique of the 10,000-piece profile-picture set, its team allocation and royalty design, and what he framed as an Ordinals-era fundraising pattern dressed in privacy-chain branding.

zkSNARKs disclosed auction mechanics that the desk already logged on September 17: 16,971 bids, 8,000 public allocations at a uniform clearing price of 1.5 ZEC, total bid volume of 25,305 ZEC, and an expected refund stack of about 13,309 ZEC for unsuccessful bids. Using the project’s disclosed ZEC price print, that bid stack was reported near $36.94 million before refunds, leaving a net raise on the order of $17 million after losers were made whole. Those auction figures remain attributed to project disclosures and secondary desks such as BlockBeats, Odaily via WEEX, and ChainCatcher—not to an independent 8bitcrypto audit of the Zcash settlement ledger.

ZachXBT’s September 19 line of attack is not the clearing price itself. He described zkSNARKs as a typical 10K PFP collection that raised more than $17 million without meaningful use or ecosystem development, and he flagged how the team set aside capital and ongoing fees. ChainCatcher’s wrap of his remarks cites a 10% team reserve, 5% secondary royalties, and an approximate $2,000 mint cost per winning identity at the 1.5 ZEC clear, then says he compared the structure to Ordinals-era cash-grab playbooks. WEEX’s Odaily-sourced note stresses the same utility gap and royalty concerns. The desk treats those points as investigator allegations and secondary paraphrase, not adjudicated findings.

Separately, Bitcoin inscriptions builder LeonidasNFT publicly accused the zkSNARKs team of being serial Ordinals entrepreneurs with a history of fraudulent projects, according to BlockBeats and Gate News coverage of the September 18 clear. That charge remains an on-chain-community allegation. Rug Room readers should keep Leonidas’s claim and ZachXBT’s utility critique in separate buckets: one is about prior project pedigree, the other is about whether a $17 million privacy-identity mint has shipped anything beyond the PFP itself.

For collectors still sitting on winning fills, the practical checklist is boring and necessary. Confirm refund credits for any unsuccessful bid, verify the wallet destination the project named for identity delivery, and do not treat a sold-out uniform-price clear as proof of durable secondary demand—especially on a privacy chain where conventional marketplace explorers may not map token IDs the way Ethereum ERC-721 desks expect. A 10% team reserve plus 5% royalties can be legitimate for a long-horizon protocol, or they can be a permanent tax on exit liquidity; the difference is delivered product, not marketing copy.

Secondary tape timing matters for that checklist. Project coverage of the September 18 clear said the secondary market would open the following day and that unsuccessful-bidder refunds would process within 24 hours. If those windows slip, holders should demand primary notices rather than Discord rumors—especially when investigator threads are already pricing reputation risk into the same collection. Rug Room’s standing filter applies: high raise plus thin utility claims plus aggressive reserve and royalty terms is a yellow flag until the team publishes spend, shipping dates, or on-chain proof of gated features.

8bitcrypto’s earlier Culture Lore writeup covered the auction clear and allocation split—8,000 public, 1,000 SNARKLIST gifts, 1,000 treasury—as a privacy-culture mint event. Today’s Rug Room update does not re-litigate that clear. It records the post-sale scrutiny: ZachXBT questioning a $17 million raise against empty utility claims, secondary desks repeating team-reserve and royalty concerns, and Leonidas alleging Ordinals-era scam pedigree. Until zkSNARKs publishes verifiable roadmap delivery, treasury transparency, or gated features holders can use without deanonymizing themselves, the desk reads the September 19 commentary as a capital-and-credibility stress test, not a resolved rug call.

Attribute the September 19 ZachXBT critique and the $17 million net-raise framing to WEEX/Odaily and ChainCatcher summaries of his remarks; attribute auction bid counts, the 1.5 ZEC clear, the 25,305 ZEC bid stack, the 13,309 ZEC refund figure, and the $36.94 million gross notional to project disclosures as carried by BlockBeats, Gate News, and prior 8bitcrypto auction coverage. Do not invent a named team wallet dump, a confirmed secondary-floor collapse percentage, or a court finding the sources did not publish. NFT desks watching Zcash culture should bookmark the investigator critique beside the auction math and wait for primary treasury and utility disclosures before treating zkSNARKs identities as liquid, productive holdings.
