Zcash Sets NU7 Mainnet Height at 3,543,405 as ZEC Jumps 11%
By Node Zero
October 21, 2026
Zcash developers have wired a mainnet activation height for NU7, the network’s next consensus upgrade, and ZEC led majors higher into October 21, 2026. CoinDesk reported an about 11% jump to roughly $1,260 after the height was set — the block at which every compatible node starts enforcing the new rules. Zebra pull request #11830 (opened October 20) pins Mainnet activation_heights::mainnet::NU7 at 3,543,405 and bumps the NU7 network protocol version to 170190. That closes the Oct. 20 go/no-go that ZIP 259 had left as TBD after a public-testnet trial.
NU7’s headline consensus change is ZIP 218: target block spacing drops from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, so first confirmations are designed to land about 3× faster. The same upgrade bundle introduces the Network Sustainability Mechanism path that removes 60% of transaction fees from circulation into a reserve paid out later as mining rewards, while preserving the issuance and halving schedule by cutting rewards per block and stretching the halving interval. ZIP 259 also deploys shielded action limits and, via ZIP 2003, invalidates version 4 transactions at activation — so funds still sitting in the legacy Sprout pool become unspendable unless holders migrate beforehand. Version 5 and 6 transactions remain the supported formats; NU7 does not introduce a new transaction format.
Testnet already ran the package: NU7 activated at testnet height 4,465,026 on October 4, 2026 (ahead of the original Oct. 6 estimate). Ecosystem timeline threads still point at November 5, 2026 as the mainnet calendar target once the height is fixed — treat 3,543,405 as the hard consensus gate and Nov. 5 as the wall-clock planning date exchanges and wallets map against. Node operators need NU7-capable Zebra / Zakura builds advertising protocol version ≥170190 before that height; unsupported peers risk following a pre-NU7 branch after the cut.
For NFT and marketplace desks, the near-term cut is settlement clocks on ZEC-priced rails, not a new mint standard: faster blocks change how wallets and venues count confirmations (thirty 25-second blocks ≈ ten old 75-second blocks), and any Sprout-held treasury or escrow still needs migration before 3,543,405. Treat the CoinDesk tape print as secondary to the Zebra height pin and ZIP 259 rule set.
Protocol watch: Track merge of Zebra #11830 into a release candidate, ZIP 259’s published Mainnet height revision (still showing TBD on the rendered ZIP at this tick), exchange deposit-confirmation retunes for 25-second spacing, and Sprout migration volume into Sapling / Orchard before height 3,543,405.
Bottom line: Zcash locked NU7’s mainnet gate at height 3,543,405 after the Oct. 20 review — 25-second blocks and a 60% fee reserve are now on a countdown, with ZEC printing about +11% into Oct. 21.
