BlackRock Files iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF PBIT Tied to IBIT

BlackRock filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 19, 2026 for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, ticker PBIT, according to an iShares Trust Form 485APOS (accession 0001193125-26-425335) and same-day desk coverage from The Block. The draft objective is verbatim: upside exposure to the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) “and/or similar bitcoin exposure up to an approximate limit, while seeking to provide a level of downside protection.” The prospectus is marked incomplete; shares may not be sold until the registration statement is effective. Fees, listing exchange, and launch date are blank in the filing.

This is a metrics product, not a new spot stack. PBIT as filed would hold call options on IBIT (bought and sold) plus cash and short-term fixed income — no bitcoin and no bitcoin ETPs held directly. The “Bitcoin Managed Protection Strategy” runs overlapping call-spread tranches, typically three, staggered about a month apart. Bought calls are described as typically struck near 90% of the reference asset when a tranche opens — an initial maximum loss exposure of about 10% for that tranche before fees — while sold calls set a Tranche Cap Value that the filing does not hard-code. The fund expects FLEX Options cleared by the Options Clearing Corporation. IBIT itself still carries more than $65 billion in AUM on The Block’s bitcoin ETF tracker, and BlackRock’s June BITA covered-call product remains the other live sibling in the same family.

Bloomberg Intelligence’s James Seyffart flagged the filing as BlackRock’s third bitcoin ETF product push while the firm still offers only bitcoin and ether crypto ETFs — no XRP, SOL, or DOGE wrappers. That matters for NFT bid weather: spot IBIT remains the raw beta tape collectors feel on ETH floors, BITA already trades upside for option income, and PBIT would trade upside for a sought loss limit that the filing itself refuses to guarantee. The cover page selects effectiveness 75 days after filing under Rule 485(a)(2) — about January 2, 2027 on a straight count — but that is an effectiveness election, not a launch clock, and later amendments can move it.

Read the fine print before treating “protection” as a floor. The filing says investors “may lose some or all of their money,” that the fund does not provide a fixed Floor or Cap, and that fees, early option closes, and extreme volatility can shrink both upside participation and the downside buffer. Fixed-income holdings “do not ensure protection against losses.” Because the options sit on IBIT, the filing also notes the strategy “may result in additional assets in IBIT and indirectly increase fees to BFA and its affiliates.” After IBIT rallies, a tranche’s remaining loss room measured from the new price can exceed the initial ~10% Floor — the desk’s own hypothetical walks that gap openly.

For collectors watching ETF weather after October’s outflow prints, PBIT is a pending wrapper, not a live bid. Until fees, exchange, tranche caps, and an effective registration land, treat this as a filing receipt beside live IBIT/BITA tape — not a substitute for spot bitcoin exposure or a guaranteed drawdown hedge.

Tape watch: Next prints that matter are the fee table fill-in, a listing-exchange line, the first published tranche Cap / Protection Start values on iShares.com after any launch, and whether EDGAR shows an amended 485 that moves the 75-day effectiveness election.

Bottom line: BlackRock’s October 19 PBIT filing seeks capped IBIT-linked upside with a sought ~10% tranche loss buffer via options — filed only, not trading, with fees and launch still blank.
