Coinbase and The Block Put Stablecoin Flows Above $400 Million an Hour

Coinbase and The Block Pro Research published “The Always-On Dollar” on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, arguing that stablecoins already function as round-the-clock dollar rails for people and businesses when banks are closed. The study puts organic stablecoin transfer activity above $400 million per hour on average in the third quarter, and says about 73% of screened transfer volume over the 12 months ending July 31 landed outside U.S. banking hours. That is a settlement-tape chapter, not a new issuer mint or a retail ETF print.

Adjusted stablecoin transaction volume more than quadrupled since the start of 2023 to reach $891 billion in Q3 2026, even after filtering automated activity and bots, per the report’s Allium-based framing. At the current growth rate, Coinbase and The Block put the stack on pace for about $1.5 trillion in quarterly adjusted transfer volume by the end of 2027 — a modeled path, not a booked total. Unique blockchain addresses holding stablecoins sit near 293 million; the firms use that as a scale proxy against card and mobile-banking bases while noting addresses are not the same as unique people.

Cost and bank adoption fill out the settlement pitch. Sending a $200 remittance in USDC on Base is about 86% cheaper than a traditional transfer on the World Bank / fee-schedule comparison the report cites. Seven of the ten largest U.S. banks have already tested stablecoins or tokenized deposits for settlement, with the remaining three signaling plans to follow. A modeled scenario in the study says moving 80% of international transactions onto stablecoin rails could unlock about $155 billion in net annual global GDP gains — treat that as scenario math, not a realized GDP print. Looking ahead, the authors also point to AI agents mediating $3–$5 trillion of global B2C commerce by 2030 as a reason always-on dollars matter beyond remittances.

For NFT and crypto desks, the useful cut is timing risk and working-capital float: when weekend or overnight settlement still matters, dollar stables already clear while card and ACH rails sleep. That sits beside — and should not be confused with — today’s issuer-specific chapters such as Injective’s KRW1 won-settlement MOU or Mastercard’s Stablecoin Security screening tool. The Always-On Dollar numbers are research aggregates with stated exclusions (small transfers, self-transfers, mint/burn for the hourly screen; bot adjustments for the quarterly volume path). They do not invent a new compliance duty for marketplace listings or NFT custody today.

Settlement watch: Track whether Q4 adjusted transfer volume keeps the climb toward the report’s $1.5 trillion quarterly path, whether bank tokenized-deposit pilots move from tests into production settlement, and whether remittance fee gaps on Base USDC versus traditional rails stay near the cited 86% savings on the next public refresh.

Bottom line: Coinbase and The Block’s October 20, 2026 Always-On Dollar study puts organic stablecoin flows above $400 million per hour with about 73% outside U.S. banking hours — and Q3 adjusted volume at $891 billion.
