Coinbase Runs EEA Conversion of 14 Non-MiCA Stablecoins Into USDC Today
By Crypto Wire
October 30, 2026
Coinbase’s European Economic Area stablecoin conversion clock is no longer a preview — it is today’s settlement event. The exchange’s MiCA non-compliant stablecoins help page still says that on October 30, 2026, remaining EEA retail balances in 14 restricted stables — including USDT, PYUSD, USD1, DAI, USDS, PAX, PAXG, GUSD, GYEN, BUST, UST, RAI, MUSD, and TGBP — convert once at the market rate into USDC where suitable, or into another supported crypto asset or currency where it is not. That is the unused fact after the October 26 announce chapter: the deadline day itself, not another calendar teaser.
Operational rules stay narrow. Buying, selling, and converting those assets on Coinbase for EEA retail customers is already restricted; withdrawal to an external wallet was the only path to keep the original tokens before today’s conversion. During processing, balances may briefly show as zero before a conversion entry appears in transaction history and the resulting balance is credited. Assets sent to Coinbase after October 30 will not be credited, traded, converted, or included in the automatic conversion — recovery through Coinbase’s unsupported-crypto process is “where technically possible” and explicitly not guaranteed. Coinbase also flags that crypto-to-crypto conversion may be a taxable event in some jurisdictions and that it does not provide tax advice.
The MiCA spine behind the swap is issuer authorization, not a Coinbase product preference. The help page says the MiCA transitional period for stablecoin issuers ended on July 1, 2026 and was not extended, so Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. — authorized as a crypto-asset service provider by Luxembourg’s CSSF — can no longer support stables whose issuer is not MiCA-authorized. If a token later becomes MiCA-compliant, Coinbase says it will reassess support, but a completed conversion will not be reversed. Nest that under ESMA’s broader wind-down pressure on noncompliant stablecoin services — including the Jan. 8, 2027 remediation window already on the MiCA Story Tracker — without inventing a same-day ESMA enforcement tally Coinbase’s notice does not print.
Settlement care stays on what clears today versus what is still a corridor forecast. USDC is the default landing asset “where suitable”; the notice does not publish a public dollar total for how much USDT or other restricted inventory will convert, and this desk will not invent one. Prefer the official asset list and the one-time conversion mechanics over social claims that every EEA wallet already shows a finished USDC credit. Retail customers who already withdrew remain outside today’s swap; customers who held balances into the deadline day take the market-rate conversion Coinbase described.
Adjacent desks stay labeled. Binance’s multi-point breach / ~45-hour withdrawal reopen trail, FREEDZ’s five-faction reveal, and Gigaverse’s convert-only Legends mint remain separate Orange County files and do not rewrite Coinbase’s EEA stablecoin rail. Kaiko’s earlier USDC euro-pair share print and France’s DeFi-access liability push stay nested MiCA context — already on the wire — not today’s discovery. This chapter only updates the settlement desk after the conversion day fires.
Deadline days can outrun ledger refreshes. A help-page conversion is not a public reserve disclosure, and a brief zero balance is not proof of loss. If Coinbase publishes a dated conversion completion notice, a supported-asset landing table beyond USDC, or a post-deadline deposit incident, that belongs in a follow-on chapter; this update keeps the official Oct. 30 mechanics and the 14-asset list.
Settlement watch: Watch whether EEA retail transaction histories print USDC (or alternate) conversion entries today — and whether post-deadline deposits of the 14 restricted stables trigger recovery tickets or stay uncredited as the help page warns.
Bottom line: Coinbase’s one-time EEA conversion of 14 non-MiCA stables into USDC (or another supported asset) runs on October 30 — the settlement-day UPDATE after the Oct. 26 announce, not a new product tease.
